#16. “Mr. Stupid”

Are you as really good at things as you think you are?

#DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT

With Dunning-Kruger effect suggests that we are not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately. In fact, we usually overestimate your own abilities. About 90% friends of mine who lack certain abilities believe they are exceptionally qualified, hmm so do I. We might not discuss about how it works or why it happens, read more here.

Look at the graph, as far as you can see, define yourself where you are. Two year ago, I had a miracle thought that my confidence could defeat every challenge due to my knowledge and experience are wide range in many fields. I was excited with new things, learn it as quick like a wind, namely: a desinger, salesman, a teacher, etc… It was a MISTAKE from the past and I was “Mr. Stupid” as well. I just grabed “the peak” which lead to poor performance lack the expertise needed to recognize how badly I was doing. And after all, I will always be a “amateur” guy.

Some of the best lessons are learned from past mistakes. The error of the past is the wisdom of the future.

Dale Tunner

How did I recognize that? Last year, while I had an oppoturnity pitching new customer for my corporation, my overconfidence was killing me. I did not prepare anything until the night before: just a few slides and a magnificent introduction. That’s all. The day after was such a desaster while eveyone in that room are experts and masters in marketing, my presentation had finished in 5 minutes, even I had more competitive advantages than the other vendor. A merciful slap was given to me by life.

At this moment, Mr. Stupid fell to “Vvalley of despair” – but I called it as a fortune fall. Thank to Dunning and Kruger, digging deeper knowledge and broaden it is the best way to climb slowly but certainly to the peak ./.

P/s: This phenomena is called living in the USA. Kidding, lmao.
